Good Intentions

by KAWS | 2015

Partly hiding behind and clutching at the right leg is a child for whom the parent figure is protector against the vagaries of life - perhaps of the playground or nursery. The adult figure of GOOD INTENTIONS adopts the attitude of classical ancient Greek sculptures of men (kouros), free-standing with arms by his sides and one foot slightly forward. This sculpture alludes to familiar childhood toys and cartoon characters while at the same time transforming their identities with a radical shift in scale, presenting them as monumental cultural presences. It embodies a popular visual vocabulary that connects to the past and to art history, linked to the present in their ability to seemingly empathize with us.
